There has been a large increase in the number of SPAM BOTS on the internet. These machines are often compromised computers of unsuspecting users and are used to send large amounts of SPAM without the owner's knowledge. Improvements in these malicious programs have made them capable of seeking out contact and other forms on websites and then use them to send large amounts of SPAM.

These machines are capable of submitting forms over and over again very rapidly, slowing down severs and clogging email systems. To defend against these actions, we have a system to ensure that it is a person who is actually submitting the form. A randomly generated image is created and displayed. The characters in this image are not readable as text by a machine and can not be read by Optical Character Recognition Software. This ensures that the form is actually being submitted by a human.

We know that these systems can seem inconvenient, however, they can greatly reduce the amount of SPAM being sent and elimiate SPAM produced by automated and compromised systems. This is especially significant in the use of "Send this site to a friend" type forms where people can send messages and links to family and friends via a web form.
